Pipelines are long-lived assets that must perform reliably for decades often in harsh environments, under regulatory scrutiny, and with zero tolerance for unplanned releases. The engineering decisions made during construction, and the maintenance practices applied in operation, determine whether that reliability is achieved.

Construction: Getting It Right the First Time

Pipeline construction is a sequential discipline where quality failures compound: a substandard weld cannot be corrected once the line is buried; a miscalculated hydrostatic test cannot undo a flawed section. Hot Tapping: Adding Connections Without Shutdown

Hot tapping allows new branch connections to be made to a live, pressurised pipeline — without shutting down the line or interrupting production. The technique requires specialised equipment, trained personnel, and careful engineering to manage the risks of working on a pressurised system.

Pigging: Maintaining Flow Efficiency and Detecting Threats

Pipeline pigs serve multiple functions: cleaning accumulated deposits that restrict flow, batching products in multi-product systems, applying inhibitor coatings to internal surfaces, and in intelligent pigging programmes — mapping the internal condition of the pipe to detect wall loss, dents, and ovality.

A structured pigging programme is one of the most cost-effective tools available to a pipeline operator. It maintains throughput, prevents deposits that accelerate corrosion, and provides the data needed to support risk-based integrity decisions.

Protective Coatings for Pipelines

External pipeline coatings fusion bonded epoxy (FBE), three-layer polyethylene (3LPE), or field-applied systems — are the primary barrier against external corrosion on buried and submerged pipelines. Coating selection depends on installation method, operating temperature, soil conditions, and design life.
